Profile facts
In context
La Luz del Mundo (officially the Church of the Living God, Pillar and Ground of the Truth, The Light of the World) was founded in Guadalajara in 1926 by Eusebio Joaquín González, who took the name Aarón and taught that God had restored the primitive Christian church through him as a living Apostle. The apostleship passed dynastically — to his son Samuel Joaquín Flores in 1964, and to Samuel's son Naasón Joaquín García in 2014 — and the Apostle's status inside the church is singular: sermons, hymnody, and the church's calendar (the Holy Supper gathering each August in Guadalajara's Hermosa Provincia colony, which draws hundreds of thousands) centre on him as God's chosen agent, and criticism of the Apostle is treated as rebellion against God.
Hermosa Provincia — the walled Guadalajara neighbourhood the church built around its flagship temple — is the model of the church's territorial pattern: member-concentrated colonies around temples, church schools, and an internal honour economy in which proximity to the Apostle defines status. Abuse allegations against the apostolic line circulated for decades (Samuel faced accusations publicised in 1997 that never reached trial); the reckoning arrived through California courts. Naasón was arrested at Los Angeles airport in June 2019; in June 2022, days before trial, he pleaded guilty to three felony counts of sexual acts with minors and received sixteen years and eight months. Co-defendants were convicted; civil suits and further federal investigation followed, with a superseding federal racketeering-and-exploitation indictment of Naasón and associates reported in 2024–25 (charges, at this writing, not adjudicated).
The church's institutional response is the entry's most instructive feature: it did not remove him. Naasón remains the Apostle of Jesus Christ in church doctrine, his imprisonment framed from pulpits as persecution akin to the apostle Paul's; members gather outside his prison on his birthday. The survivors' movement (ex-LLDM networks documenting abuse and shunning) and the church's continued growth proceed in parallel — the coexistence of adjudicated leadership crimes with intact charismatic authority that this catalogue's highest-band scoring exists to describe.

Frequently asked questions
Q.Is La Luz del Mundo a cult?
CLCI Hub deliberately avoids the binary label "cult." Instead it places groups on a transparent 0–40 spectrum of documented control using Steven Hassan's BITE model (Behaviour, Information, Thought, Emotional). La Luz del Mundo scores 35 out of 40 — "Destructive / Extreme", at high confidence. The score describes documented control patterns, not a judgement of members' sincerity or beliefs; many members do not personally experience the patterns listed.
Q.What is La Luz del Mundo's CLCI score?
La Luz del Mundo scores 35 out of 40 on the Cult-Like Control Index, which falls in the "Extreme" band. That total is the sum of four BITE axes — Behaviour 9, Information 8, Thought 8, Emotional 8 — plus a signed modifier of +2 for aggravating or mitigating factors.
Q.Why does La Luz del Mundo score 35 on the CLCI?
The score reflects publicly documented patterns including: Apostle convicted of child sexual abuse (2022); Total submission to Apostle's authority; Severance from non-LDM family; Substantial financial demands. These map onto the BITE axes of behaviour, information, thought, and emotional control, and a signed modifier of +2 is applied for factors such as financial demands, leadership accountability, and exit costs. Every claim is backed by the citations in the Sources section on this page.
Q.How reliable is the La Luz del Mundo rating?
This profile is rated High confidence. High confidence means the score is backed by court records, academic work, and/or sustained investigative journalism. CLCI scores are not fixed — they are revised whenever new public evidence appears, and groups that reform can score lower over time.
